How do Fun and Happiness relate to Success?

How much

Fun

and Happiness are you having in your day and/or week?

Do you think that doing things that are fun contributes to Success?

According to  Colleen C. Barrett, President and Corporate Secretary of Southwest Airlines

“Work is either fun or drudgery. It depends on your attitude.”

So, if we adjust our attitude about what we do then anything could be fun?

University of Florida Management Researcher Erin Fluegge-Woolf said, “One of my findings was that more fun at work also leads to increased engagement.”

Watch the Charlie Chaplin “Modern Times” who kind of – in his slapstick way – makes a point about this.

Charlie tightens nuts on a conveyor belt and a women’s dress.

It also has a ‘presentation’ of the ‘delightful feeding’ machine, which Charlie Chaplin gets to to experience.

This was in 1934.

Charlie Chaplin ranked the 10th greatest screen ledgend of all times by the American Film Institute in 1999.

The video below is a short section out of “Modern Times“.

  2. Hi Yorinda. I’m glad I found my way into teaching music, because it is so much fun! I’ve had some not-fun days when I taught public school, but mostly I have enjoyed working with people who are learning music. My students look very skeptical when they see me, a grandma, play power chords on ‘Wild Thing’, but I tell them “Hey, it was my generation that invented rock ‘n’ roll!”

Wishing you a song in your heart,

  3. I definitely agree that more fun=greater engagement ergo productivity. They certainly figured that out at Zappo’s where they’ve incorporated fun into the culture. I now that I’m certainly a lot more engaged when having fun than when not. I’m all for taking taking the ’4 letter word’ out of work.

  4. Thanks for sharing that funny video Yorinda. I agree with an earlier comment if in ain't fun don't do it. I even get pleasure by some the mundane things we all have to do by reflecting on how good I will feel having finished the task and having fun with it. My fun is walking the dogs a watches them have fun when we let them off the leash.

On a side note that reminds me of Lucy on the desert assembly line.

  5. Hey Yorinda,
Fun for me means enjoying whatever I am undertaking without having regrets, it could be out playing soccer, playing cards, teasing my friends or just out on a date watching a movie or walk on the park.Having fun leads to inspired action and more productivity simply because one is happy. Thanks for the post.

  6. I have been really having fun blogging and commenting, connecting on social media sites, reading uplifting comments and tweets. For me, it is so much easier and more fun to connect online than to attend networking events where everyone is trying to sell me their product or enroll me in their business. I love watching Charlie Chaplin – can't help laughing every time.

  7. When you have fun things are much easier, time goes by faster and it takes less effort to stay engaged. So, yes when you have fun it will be easier to have success.
Fun for me is my job, playing tennis or golf, spending time with friends, traveling and so much more. Too much to all mention here.

  8. Yorinda,
Thanks for this great post. I tell my couples in counseling over and over, that creating FUN and laughing out loud together is the secret to having a long-term relationship. It's just as important in our careers, as I LOVE creating content for my current and future clients to enjoy and have better lives.
    Thanks again,
    Adam

  11. I like to play games with my family, go for walks and hang out at the beach.

I definitely feel more refreshed after having some fun. :)

  12. Yorinda,

Attitude is everything. We can turn anything into a dull, boring and not-so-fun experience. On the other hand… we can also make anything we do in our lives fun and successful… it is our choice!

    Thanks,

  13. I have to agree! My tagline is Enjoy to the End! I never thought it was possible to enjoy work as much as I enjoy starting a new carreer with network marketing and blogging!! Being the social animal that I am, every day brings joy to me!
Thank you for the cute movie – I enjoyed it! :)

  14. a mentor of mine says "if it's not fun i don't do it." we have made work synonymous with toiling and labor and drudgery; it's going to take a mindset shift to NOT think of work being a 4-letter word! thanks for your insight; beautiful!

  15. The video was really funny.

I do believe having fun while you are going about your "work" makes you more productive, holds your attention better, and just makes you happier. One thing I love to do while I work is bring my dog in the office. He's generally very quiet, but occasionally needs to have a pet or two, which gives me moments for a quick break. I also enjoy putting together videos. I've been doing quite a few of these lately and am having a blast. Soon they'll be available to everyone.

Thank you so much for the reminder that work doesn't have to be dull and boring. Of course, when you love what you do, it doesn't seem that way, but you have to keep it fresh.

    Live with passion and purpose,
    Vanessa
