Children laugh 300-400 times a day adults laugh 10-15 times a day.

When we breath in we take in 500 – 700 ml of air.

Most people have  approximately  2500-2800 ml residual air left in their lungs which is mostly mostly stale (carbon dioxide)

Laughter sessions/Laughter Yoga sessions

In Laughter Yoga sessions we laugh for no reason.

A combination of yogic (belly) breathing and laughter and gentle stretching excercises usually leaves people feeling more energized and with a sense of general well being.

The exercises are playful and childlike and the simulatated laughter soon becomes real.

A usual session includes 30 minutes Laughter exercises and breathing and 15 minutes guided relaxation.

  1. Hi Yorinda,

This is a really interesting article.I think more laughter groups should be organized all over! Seeing how many benefits there are to laughter it makes sense that I would only bring positive results.

The title reminds me of the movie, “Patch Adams” It was based on a true story about a doctor who believed that laughter is the best medicine. To this day, the real Patch Adams runs the Gesundheit Institute in Arlington, Virginia. “Patch Adams, M.D., is a nationally known speaker on wellness, laughter, and humor as well as on health care and health care systems. He approaches the issues of personal, community, and global health with zestful exuberance, according to Time Magazine. Dr. Adams believes that the most revolutionary act one can commit in our world is to be happy.

You listed several facts, and I thought it is amazing that 10 minutes of hearty laughter is equal to 30 minutes on a rowing machine! I’d much rather laugh! The other fascinating fact is that “Children laugh 300-400 times a day adults laugh 10-15 times a day.” I guess the message is adults need to loosen up! Thanks for this insightful article and fun video!

  2. In India they have a lot of laughter clubs. People get together just to laugh. I’ve heard that several clubs have popped up in the US as well. There is no denying the benefits. Thanks for such an enlightening post.

  4. Hi Yorinda,

Last year I bought a Laughter Yoga dvd from Dr Kataria's website and I can now do Laughter Yoga in my own private session as there are no groups nearby to where I live. I introduced it to a group of ladies that I get together with once a month and they loved it as much as I did!! It is such an emotional release, it feels good and it costs nothing!!! I'm so glad I found your post on the benefits of laughter yoga haha hoho hehe!!

    Cheers,

    Lynn

  5. Hi Yorinda.
This is great information. I'd heard this before but not seen any real numbers. In fact, I've been searching for some terrific comedy to share with my family just to increase the laugh factor. It really is fascinating stuff. Thanks for the great post. ~ Linnea

  6. Hi Yorinda,
That is a fascinating research study concluding that 10 minutes of hearty laughter equates to 30 minutes on a rowing machine. Must try more of the fascinating stuff! Had heard about this form of exercise being popular in Mumbai, glad to hear it is catching on elsewhere as well now.
Thanks for reminding us how good it is for us, and for providing so many reasons for us to laugh and be playful, somehow i never needed an excuse :)

  7. Hi Yorinda,
I've never heard of Laughter Yoga before and I just love it. Thanks for the introduction!
I can see how laughing with a large group of people could be very contagious and continuous.
It was also very exciting to learn that forced laughter can give you the same health benefits.
I plan on giving much more priority to laughing. It's sad how little we laugh as adults.
Do you have a good joke for me?
    Thanks for the great post!

  8. Yorinda,

You have some very original posts here. Didn’t realize laughter had such a power effect on us all. Something that feels so good. 10 minutes of hardy laughter, wonder how many of us can do that on a daily basis. Sure beats 30 minutes of rowing!

  10. This is a great post Yorinda. If any one out there ever gets an opportunity to take part in one of these classes ‘just do it’. Yorinda is awesome and I had the privilege to participate in one of her Laughter Yoga classes with a group of friends. We had so much fun. Laughed our heads off ! Ha ha. It was really interesting how we felt both challenged and liberated at the same time. The general consensus at the end of the session was feeling exhausted and exhilarated and that it was the most fun any of has had exercising. We all sat there with gauky grins feeling great. We are planing to have regular sessions.

    Laugh heartily, loudly and often!

  12. Very cool info! I was going to ask, but if it is “fake” laughter is that going to have the same effect? You said once you start going it will turn into “real” laughter, but what if you stay in that fake zone??

If you have any insights please let me know.

Thanks and have a wonderful day!

  14. It was lovely stumbling over your blog today. Laughter is great isn’t it? That feeling of laughing so hard there are tears streaming down your face, you can’t talk, you can barely breath .. it’s infectious and so wonderful. John Cleese is very funny and has a lot to say that makes sense about laughter. Here are some of my favourite comedians: Billy Connolly, Victoria Wood, Michael McIntyre, Robin Williams, Bill Cosby, Tony Hancock, Billy Crystal, Eddie Izzard, Lily Tomlin, Tim Allen.

    Have a great day!

  15. Wow, this is totally fascinating! We’ve all heard the term “laughter is the best medicine” but I never would have imagined it applied to physical as well as emotional well being. When you really think about it, though, our emotional state of mind really is everything!

Laugh Yoga hadn’t heard of it before but I love the idea. Frightening statistic at how few times adults laugh compared to children. On my way home this afternoon I am going to try and laugh for the whole 30 mins. Hope I don’t cause a car accident and just laugh my way through it.
