Selenium
Selenium is one of the important minerals in our health.
It’s main function is to convert hydrogen peroxide to water.
Another function is to activates gluthathione peroxidase, which is an enzyme that is important in regards to preventing and/or counteracting free radical (cause of degenerative disease). Dr. Andew Weil MD wrote in his book “Ask Dr. Weil” on page 207 about test tube studies were Selenium with Vitamin E inhibited tumour growth. This is just one example of the many benefits Selenium can have on the functioning of cell and body.
The fish that have a high mercury content appearently are not effected by that since the get the selenium.
Research suggests that a lot of cancer is related to a Selenium deficiency.
Selenium can also counteract the negative effects of heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium (Diet Nutrition Cancer by National Research Council, page 168)
The fish that have a high mercury content apparently are not effected by that since the get the selenium.

If grown in selenium rich soil:
Mushrooms garlic, onion, broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes,

The farmers in New Zealand are giving their animals selenium.

In China they found that a lot of children were suffering from Keshan disease; they were living in an area where the soil was depleted of Selenium. A study in which they gave half the children Selenium showed that Selenium was reducing the death rate significantly. so they started to give all the children selenium.
New Zealand is one of the countries which has virtually no Selenium in the soil.
I hope that this article will help to raise the awareness.

Hello Yorinda
Reading your article promted me to read more about selenium. In George Matheljan’s book The World’s Healthiest Foods this written about the importance of selenium. Selenium is considered a micromineral, meaning that it need to be consumed daily in small amounts, its contribution to health is anything but small. Thanks for this article about a mineral that can help improve our health.
Thanks

Nice post, I never realized some of the foods you mentioned had selenium. The only thing I knew selenium was good for was for heavy metal cleanse but specifically in relating to having ones metal fillings removed. I have done some research in getting my fillings removed in the near future and had no idea what was involved I just know they are causing me some health problems, and in a few places I read that selenium help with the detoxing and removal of the heavy metal as if i remember correctly that the selenium binds with the heavy metal to help your body rid it faster than without it.
Hi
Great post I did not know selenium was so important.
Thanks again
